Sometimes you encounter situations so awful that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of unadulterated absurdity and just resigns itself to fate, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of morning hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and badly all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was extremely behind schedule for work.

By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
